Frankfurt Airport (or Flughafen Frankfurt am Main in German) is the gateway to Germany for many tourists. It is spread over 5,000 acres and offers a wide range of services to passengers.



It is the busiest airport in Germany. It is also among the ten busiest airports worldwide. This is due to its status as a hub for Lufthansa and Condor. Also, it serves as a major point of departure and transfer for international and domestic travel. Frankfurt Airport can take you to any destination in Germany and Europe, including the city of Frankfurt.

What you need before you go

Frankfurt Airport is much more than an airport. It is a huge complex that includes a shopping center and The Square, Germany's largest office building. Two Hilton hotels are also located here. It is easily accessible from the airport, and can be connected to Terminal 1 via a pedestrian walkway.

There are two terminals located at the airport, a smaller first class terminal used only by Lufthansa. Terminal 1 is the older, more spacious terminal and houses A to Z. It is divided into three levels, with departures at the top, arrivals, baggage claim and transportation at the bottom. Non-Schengen flights depart from Z gates, while Schengen flights depart from A gates. Terminal 2 houses Concourses E and D. The new terminal is located at the Z gates. Schengen flights depart from A gates. You can travel between terminals by taking the Skyline Shuttle train, which takes about 2 minutes.

Airport Parking

Frankfurt Airport offers more than 15,000 parking spaces. However, you have to book your seat in advance on the airport website. You must pay at least one day. Shuttles that run every 20 minutes to Terminals 1 or 2 are free and available from this location.


You can also take advantage of park and sleep and fly deals in Terminal 1 at Intercity or Sheraton hotels. These deals include 15 days of free parking if you stay at least one night at any of the hotels.

Driving Directions

The Autobahn connects Frankfurt Airport to the Frankfurter Kreuz, where the two busy motorways A3 and A5 meet. Signs in German and English indicate different areas on the way to the airport.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Frankfurt Airport has two railway stations at Terminal 1. Frankfurt Airport has two railway stations. The airport's regional railway station has metro, regional and local trains. You can take the subway lines S8 or S9 to the center of Frankfurt in about 15 minutes or to Frankfurt Central Station in about 10 minutes.


Terminal 1 is just a few steps away from the airport's long-distance railway station. This station has high-speed intercity trains that depart in all directions. Check in at the station to check in for about 60 airlines.


Public buses take passengers between Frankfurt Airport, Frankfurt City Center, Schwanheim, Darmstadt, and Darmstadt. Companies like FlixBus or BlaBlaBus offer long-distance bus services that connect you to cities in Germany and Europe.


Taxis can be hired outside both terminals. Taxis to the center of Frankfurt take about 20-30 minutes and cost about 40 euros.


You can also check with nearby hotels to see if they offer free shuttle service to the airport.

Where to Eat & Drink

The square is a great place to eat near Frankfurt Airport. The jumbo-sized building houses a number of excellent restaurants and bars, including Polnar, Thong Thai and Flavor in the Square.


You can find fast food options near your gate like Deli Bros and McDonalds. But you also have the option of sitting at the bar and enjoying a meal or drink at popular spots like Hausman's and Kafer's. You can grab a snack at Goodmann & Filippo, an Italian-American deli, or the health food shop in Terminal 1.


Where to Buy

You can shop at Frankfurt Airport with hundreds of luxury and specialty brands. It's possible to buy everything from Rubik's Cubes to Rolexes.


You'll find luxury brands like Hugo Boss and Versace in Terminal 1. You'll find souvenir shops, convenience stores, and even a camera store. Caviar House or Prunier can be visited if you are celebrating an important business deal, or if you just want to feel fancy. They sell champagne, caviar and accessories such as gold-plated caviar spoons. If you're looking for adventure, outdoor retailers like Jack Wolfskin and Geox are great options.


To find out which stores have specials, make sure you visit Terminal 2's coupon wall first. Although there are fewer shops in this terminal, you will still find stores like Brinkman & Lange and Mont Blanc.


How to spend your layover

If you want to make the most of your short time at Frankfurt Airport, there is plenty to do. You can shop or take one of the airport experience tours that will take you behind the scenes of this huge airport. In Terminal 1, you can also enjoy a movie with your travel companions, or play video games. You may need to take a break and shower before boarding your flight. You can book private rooms at My Cloud Transit Hotel in Terminal 1.


You'll find more things to do when you leave the terminal. This means you will have to go through security again on your return. If you have time, you can take public transport in Frankfurt. There you will find the reconstructed Old Town which recreates the area lost during World War II.


You don't have to go far from the airport. There are two options for entertainment around the airport: the Square shopping center or the airport itself. The shopping mall has a grocery store, casino and hair salon. All this before going through security. You can even rent a conference room for business travelers if you need to squeeze in a quick meeting.


There are plenty of hotels near the airport that can provide you with a restful night's sleep, whether you're staying overnight or catching an early morning flight. You can walk to the Sheraton, Hilton Garden Inn and Steigenberger Airport Hotel. There are other hotels nearby such as Park Inn by Radisson and Steigenberger Airport Hotel.

Welcome Lounge

This lounge is available to all Frankfurt Airport passengers arriving from outside Europe.

Entrance fee to the lounge is 78 USD. The lounge is open from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM. It can be accessed from Terminal 1 Landside, Arrivals Area B, near Baggage Claim.


Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge

This lounge is available for Air Canada and Economy passengers.


To access the lounge, you must be an Air Canada member for an annual period. The lounge opens 2 hours before the first Air Canada flight departs and 30 minutes before the end of the night. The lounge is located in Terminal 1 on the 3rd floor in Concourse B.

Sky Lounge

Economy passengers can use the lounge if they have booked their lounge passes in advance, or if they are members of Priority Pass (a lounge access program). If a room becomes available, you can also purchase admission at the door.


Three hours of lounge time is available for purchase for USD 36.65. The lounge is open daily between 6:45pm and 9:00pm. You can find it airside on the third floor in front of Terminal 2, Concourse D, Gate D8.


Air France Lounge

This lounge is available for economy travelers traveling to countries within the Schengen zone.

This lounge is available to Priority Pass members, or USD 36.65 per hour, space permitting. Timings are from 5:45 PM to 8:15 PM. Daily it is located on the airside of Terminal 2 in front of Hall D, Schengen Area, Gate D26.


Prime Class Lounge

Priority passes are available for economy pass holders. You can also buy lounge passes online.


Online pass for this lounge costs USD 32.73. The lounge is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:30 PM. You will find the entrance in Terminal 2 Airside Concourse E in the non-Schengen area near Gate E7

Lufthansa Business Lounge

Lufthansa has numerous business lounges throughout FRA. These lounges can be accessed by purchasing a pass online.


The entrance fee to these lounges is 67 USD. They are open daily between 5:00 am and 10:00 pm. The first location is located in Terminal 1 Airside Concourse B near Gate B44/B48. The second location is within the same terminal and concourse, but closer to Gate B24/B28.

Lufthansa Senator Lounge

Economy passengers arriving from any terminal can use this lounge, provided they are not departing on a non-Schengen flight.

This lounge is available for 67 USD. Children under 2 years old get in for free. It is open daily from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM. You can find it in Concourse C near Terminal 1, Gate C14 or C15.


LuxxLounge

Priority Passes, pre-purchased Lounge Passes or door passes can be used for lounge access. However, this is only available if there is room. This lounge is located on the ground side, so you have to go through security again before heading to your gate.


If you pre-order online, the pass costs USD 32.73. Door passes cost USD 34.37 per hour and USD 57.29 for the whole day. Lounge timings are from 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM. The daily location is Terminal 1 Landside in Departures Hall B/C. Follow the escalators from check-in counter 680.


Premium Traveler Lounge

This lounge is also known as the Iberia VIP Lounge. This lounge is available to Priority Pass holders or online purchasers of Lounge Passes.

Online pass for this lounge costs USD 32.73. It is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The lounge can be found on the second floor near Gate 26 in Concourse D of Terminal 2.

Frankfurt Airport Wi-Fi Access and Work Areas

You may have been to many airports, and you may have found yourself in an area with no Wi-Fi. This can lead to a frustrating stopover. FRA will never have this problem.


FRA provides unlimited, free Wi-Fi. More than 300 access points are scattered throughout the facility. Most of them are in departure areas. Log in to "Frankfort-airport" and enter your email address.


If you travel regularly with FRA, you may want to set up an account. This will enable your device to connect automatically whenever you land at the airport.

You can find a quiet place to work in the airport by visiting one of these lounges. These will be covered later.

Tips and Tidbits

Free strollers are available at service points for families with small children. There are also places for children to play at the airport.

Terminal 1 has a post office for those last minute mails.


Would you like some fresh air? You can find the Roof Deck at Terminal 1 just above Gate B42. You can enjoy beautiful views of the airport from this deck. There is even a telescope.


You can relax after a long journey by using the facilities in the terminal. Although you will need to pay a fee, it is much less expensive than booking a hotel.

Both terminals have entertainment zones that offer comfortable lounge chairs, a warm atmosphere and plenty of power outlets. The silent chairs of the future are designed to block out any noise.


You can find a quiet space in the yoga rooms in Terminal 1 or both terminals.
